On the summit of Maungakiekie, Auckland’s most iconic mountain, stands a single pine tree. The mountain is also known as One Tree Hill because, before European settlement, there was a Maori pa (fortified village) on its top, and a single totara tree grew beside it. In 1994, Maori activist Mike Smith cut into the pine with a chainsaw, arguing that its presence was inappropriate at a site of historic importance to Maori. Smith’s actions were highly controversial, and he was convicted of contempt of court.

In the forest, pine trees are found at high altitudes, growing to define the ‘tree line’ – the last height at which trees can grow before conditions become too inhospitable. The pine tree that straddles the boundary between the forest and the open grasslands of the plateau has been the subject of much debate and has come to symbolize both the challenges and triumphs of high-altitude living.

The Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda) is one of the fastest-growing southern pines. They can grow up to two feet or more in a single year, making them an excellent choice for fast-growing shade or privacy trees. The rounded, broad evergreen crown makes them an attractive addition to landscapes.
