Airsoft guns are small, plastic-bodied weapons that fire pellets (sometimes called BBs) for paintball-style games and target practice, as well as for military and law enforcement training. They resemble and often look like real guns, so they are subject to the same laws regarding their manufacture, sale, and ownership as actual firearms. They are also popular with children and used as props for movie productions. Because of their uncanny resemblance to real firearms, airsoft guns have caused some safety concerns.
Depending on the design mechanism for pellet propulsion, airsoft guns can be categorized into two groups: mechanical, which uses a coil spring-loaded piston air pump that is manually cocked (e.g., spring guns — commonly referred to as “springers” and the cheapest, lowest-quality airsoft weapons) or automatically cycled by a battery-powered electric motor gearbox (e.g., AEGs) and are the most common type of airsoft gun.
There are many extra features that can be installed on an airsoft gun to enhance its performance and accuracy. The most popular upgrade is the hop-up, which is a rubber component (usually made of polycarbonate) that contacts the top of the pellet just before it enters the barrel and imparts backspin to flatten its trajectory.
Airsoft guns require routine maintenance to keep them working properly. They should be wiped down and lubricated before and after every use with WD-40 or another 100% silicone spray. One of the most important things to remember is to never point an airsoft gun at anyone or anything unless you intend to shoot it; doing so could cause serious injury. It is also a good idea to wear protective gear when playing, including goggles and a mask, to protect yourself from accidental shots. airsoft guns
